Meditation – Experiencing the Quiet Gift
The gifts of meditation are many.
And there are many reasons to meditate. Some people meditate to relax. Some meditate for spiritual reasons, like the mystics of old who sought enlightenment, whereas other people meditate for health reasons.
When I began meditating over 30 years ago, I meditated mostly to improve my awareness of certain issues in my life. My practice of insight meditation resulted in numerous gifts of understanding and many unexpected answers to perplexing questions.
Over the years, I have meditated for many purposes, but now I prefer to meditate for one reason: the pure joy of it!
A Joy-Filled Process
Entering the silence is a delightful process that is like stepping into another, more peaceful world. Submitting to meditation closes down the usual doors of thought and perception, allowing the meditator to experience a blissful silence, as if stepping aside from his/her usual life. It is a liberating journey into the depths of inner reality.
The meditator’s customary thoughts, biases and beliefs are checked at the door. Only by becoming empty and surrendering completely to the process can the meditator open himself/herself to the full benefits of the experience . . . and to new possibilities for awareness.
Meditation can be an exercise in peaceful bliss, and going into trance is extremely therapeutic in itself. That is my main reason for entering a meditative state, to encounter the inexpressible joy available to those who dare go beyond the normal confines of day-to-day consciousness.
Meditation is a quiet gift beyond compare.
Research
New research is casting a favorable light on meditation, and it is proving to be a useful therapeutic adjunct to the fields of psychotherapy and psychiatry. It is assuming a helpful role in the treatment of chronic pain, insomnia and a variety of mental disorders, to name a few.
And it appears to have a positive impact upon the brain, as well as the ability to open the door to wisdom and understanding.
Decreased stress and hypertension, improved immune functioning and an increase in positive feelings have been reported in the research.
Yet meditation is its own reward. In fact, I hardly think there is another experience quite like it. Few other experiences allow one to delve into the remote reaches of reality, to experience God directly or to attune oneself with the cosmic universe, however one wishes to define it. While tasting, first-hand, the tranquility and peace of mind that rewards the patient sojourner of inner space, meditation can be a boon to one’s level of happiness and contentment.
After a period of meditation, I feel as though something remarkable has happened. And I am extremely relaxed and rejuvenated . . . and yet energized. The calming after effects may last for hours.
You can choose to stop the world at any time. Just get off the roller coaster and find a quiet, private place to relax and meditate. Forty-five minutes spent in quiet meditation can recharge your run-down batteries and make you feel like a million bucks . . . and it can open the doors of perception to brave, new insights.
Yes, there are many reasons to meditate, but remember to meditate for the sheer joy of it. The meditative experience can be a beautiful one — one which offers many gifts and benefits.
And nothing is more fulfilling.
